Alexa Chung spent the next six years of her life striking poses for a variety of top-flight brands including Urban Outfitters, Fanta, Sony Ericsson, Sunsilk, and Tampax. She also flashed her pearly whites in the industry’s top teen magazines, becoming a familiar face to the readers of Elle Girl and CosmoGIRL! However, although she may have been smiling on the outside, Alexa wasn’t entirely happy with the way her image was being projected to the public. "I was always classed as the girl next door, really tomboyish, when I always wanted to be really kitteny," Alexa complains.

Alexa eventually left modeling in 2006 when producers from Channel 4 asked her to replace Miquita Oliver as the host of Popworld, the network’s lively Saturday morning music show. “I didn't really want to be a presenter, because I thought it was even less of a career than a model,” Alexa admits, “but then I went on to have the best year of my life. We were encouraged to be quite nasty to interviewees.” Alexa’s sarcastic style was especially evident in a memorable interview with Panic! at the Disco! “I corrected singer Brendon Urie’s grammar halfway through and then it all went a bit cold,” she recalls. “He got pissed off after that. The clip is on YouTube and about 10,000 American kids have left comments saying: ‘Oh my God, who does she think she is? I hate the English.’ Which is amusing.”

Although Popworld ended its seven-season run later that year, Alexa soon scored additional gigs as a presenter on Big Brother’s Big Mouth and Get a Grip, a topical sketch comedy series costarring Black Adder alumnus Ben Elton. “They wanted to pitch this grumpy old man against someone younger,” she says of the short-lived ITV program. “I can’t think of other shows that had that dynamic -- it was hilarious.”

Sadly, that dynamic failed to lure in viewers and Alexa Chung moved on in 2008 to work as a roving reporter on Gok’s Fashion Fix and as a presenter on the shamelessly trashy reality show Vanity Lair. "It was a show that investigated what it means to be attractive,” she explains. “It was based in an opulent house and it started with 10 people who had voted themselves 10 out of 10, as attractive as they can possibly be. Each week we added three new people to the mix and they had to decide who stayed, after having spent time with them." Alexa also began dabbling in print journalism by penning a monthly column for the British women’s magazine Company and a weekly “Girl About Town” piece for The Independent.

Alexa Chung’s unique presenting style eventually caught the attention of MTV, and she was lured across the pond in 2009 to host It’s On with Alexa Chung, a live, interactive talk show featuring celebrity interviews and musical performances from indie and mainstream artists. Although the program was well received, the production schedule proved to be too grueling for Alexa, and she tendered her resignation in mid-December, 2009. “She is absolutely exhausted,” a source close to Alexa revealed after she tossed in the towel. “She’s been working 16-hour days on four live shows a week. She didn’t want to do that anymore.”

    looking ahead
Although Alexa Chung isn’t sure what she’ll do next, she does know she eventually wants to attend university. "I definitely will,” she says. “Because I just don't feel like my education's complete really. I do feel like there's gaps. It would be great to work really hard for a time and then go and study after that. I don't ever want to stop learning."
